A Practical Guide to Infection Control

About This Course

This course will focus on the principles and protocols of infection control in dentistry and the theoretical rational for performing the procedures. Every dental office should have at least one person in charge of the infection control program. The results of a 2006 Dental Assisting National Board survey show that the responsibility for infection control and US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance often rests on the shoulders of at least one dental assistant in the dental office. Upon completion of this course the reader will understand the basic principles of infection control in the dental setting. These areas will be covered:
1) Standards for Infection Control
2) Hand Hygiene
3) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
4) Sterilization, Disinfection and use of Barriers
5) Dental Unit Water Lines
6) Preventing Contamination of the Dental Laboratory
7) Requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen standard
8) The Role of the Infection Control Coordinator
9) Training Topics for Infection Control
10) Locate resources for Infection Control and Safety
